Fireworks are a big part of many Utah holidays and celebrations, but they can be very dangerous. Here are five things you need to know to keep your family safe.

Follow local rules

Some areas allow only certain types of fireworks. In Utah Valley, the following fireworks are illegal: bottle rockets, sky rockets, cannon crackers, ground salutes, M-80s, cherry bombs, and Roman Candles. Look up the local law or contact your local fire department officials if you have questions.

What time of the year are fireworks legal?

Fireworks can be sold only at certain times of the year, typically during the week or so leading up to one of the following holidays:

4^th of July.
24^th of July.
New Year’s.

Be safe and smart

Children should not use fireworks. Make sure there is always an adult watching.
Remember that mixing Alcohol and fireworks is a bad idea.
Follow the instructions on your fireworks.
Avoid shooting fireworks near dry grass, bushes, or materials that are flammable. Utah is very dry.
Never aim fireworks where they could land on a house or a person
Have a garden hose, bucket of water, or other water source ready in case of an emergency.
Don’t travel out of state to purchase illegal fireworks. Period.
